French Toast is one of those recipes that can be made for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. There are millions of French Toast recipes floating around the internet but I promise you, you will love this one. This French Toast recipe is super flavorful and buttery. It’s also extremely easy to make! I like to serve it with bananas, strawberries, and soft scrambled eggs for the ultimate complete breakfast.

What’s the best bread for French Toast?

I know challah bread is a popular choice for making French Toast, but I’m one of those people that never have it on hand. That’s why I love this recipe, it calls for ingredients you most likely have on hand.

You can also make French Toast with wheat bread, Italian bread, or whatever you have in your bread box. When in doubt, I like to use a simple white bread.

The Ultimate French Toast Recipe

The best French Toast has the following 3 elements:

  • A creamy egg custard for soaking the bread before cooking
  • Crisp, caramelized edges on the cooked toast
  • Delicious toppings to enjoy

If you’re new to making French Toast it might seem like a daunting task. Let me assure you that it’s really not difficult at all! A few common, but quality ingredients and simple, concise instructions are all you need to make this classic French Toast recipe.

Ingredients Needed for French Toast:

It really doesn’t take much to make the ultimate French Toast recipe. Here’s what you’ll need to make it:

  • White Bread
  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Butter

Using fresh ingredients will take your French Toast to the next level! I like to use good white bread, whole milk and high quality vanilla. A quality European butter will also make this French Toast super delicious. You can also use half & half in place of milk to make the custard mixture even more creamy.

How to Make French Toast:

Use any bread of your choice, however, white sliced bread works perfectly for this recipe. Here’s all you have to do:

  1. Add the eggs, vanilla extract, whole milk, and cinnamon to a large, shallow bowl. Use a whisk to thoroughly mix the ingredients together.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add some butter to the pan.
  3. Dip the bread in the milk and egg mixture, coating both sides evenly.
  4. Place the bread slices in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  5. Top your french toast with powdered sugar, butter, and maple syrup, if desired.
  6. Serve and enjoy!

What to serve with French Toast?

You can easily create a wonderful breakfast or brunch spread by serving your fresh, homemade French Toast with any of these:

  • Bacon
  • Sausage links or patties
  • Eggs
  • Fresh fruit
  • Coffee
  • Orange Juice
  • Mango banana smoothies

What to put on French Toast

My favorite way to serve French Toast? Warm maple syrup, a little powdered sugar, and softened butter.

  • Berry syrup
  • Sliced banana
  • Whipped cream
  • Pecans

You could even top your French Toast with some apple slices sauteed in butter and a drizzle of homemade caramel sauce!

Made to this tonight, and boy was it a hit. My daughter thought I was weird when I decided to make a super simple breakfast, instead of the usual meal that takes forever to cook…..but, I won her over! I see so many French toast recipes with quite a lot of ingredients. Loved this, as I already had everything on hand. Thanks again, for bringing another hit to my picky eaters 🙂

FAQs

Should I cook French toast in butter or oil? ›

Butter gives French toast a deep richness and comforting quality, which are what we crave on mornings we sizzle this breakfast staple. To prevent burning or smoking, use a combination of butter and oil in the pan to cook the toast.

Is heavy cream or milk better for French toast? ›

A creamy custard is the key to incredible French toast, so skip the watery skim milk and go for whole milk or half-and-half. Straight heavy cream turns French toast into dessert, so lean that way if you're looking for decadence.

Should you cover French toast when cooking? ›

You can leave it longer if you want. Just cover it and refrigerate it (it's fine in the fridge overnight). To bake the French toast, cover it and slide it into your oven for 30 minutes. Uncover it and then bake another 10 minutes until the bread looks puffed and golden brown on top.

Why is French toast unhealthy? ›

French Toast is a delicious breakfast entree that is loved by many. With this in mind, french toast can be very calorie dense with high amounts of added sugar and fat. But, it can be tweaked to reduce the sugar and fat content while adding some fiber to your breakfast - yay!

How can you tell when French toast is done? ›

"You know when your French toast is done when the center is set and doesn't have a runny consistency once cut," Oliveira says. If you're cooking a thinner French toast or omitted eggs from your soaking liquid, a quick pan-fry will do the trick, with 3 to 6 minutes on each side.

What bread is good for French toast? ›

What Is the Best Bread for French Toast? For a solid French toast, aim for sturdy bread with a uniform texture and a soft crust. Hearty sandwich bread, brioche, challah, and shokupan (Japanese milk bread) are all great choices. Avoid rustic loaves with thick crusts or large holes in the interior.

Can bread be too hard for French toast? ›

Pick Your Bread Thoughtfully

How thick should French toast be? ›

For stuffed French toast, you'll want a slice of bread that's half an inch thick instead of 1” on account of all the toppings and fillings you'll be adding. In short, 1” is a very good thickness for your French toast, though don't be too worried if you're not exactly on the level.

What happens if you soak French toast too long? ›

However, soaking it for too long could leave your French toast a little too soggy, and could even cause the bread to fall apart when you lift it up to fry it on the griddle.

How often should you flip French toast? ›

Continue until the pan is full with a single layer of toast. Cook until golden brown and all of the batter looks cooked, then flip with a turner and cook the second side until golden brown. If needed, adjust the temperature, so it doesn't burn or stay soggy.
