I will hopefully be at nats for the last week of the month, so no g-ville MSCC or deland SCCA if I can get my sh*t together. The evo school should be alot of fun at fort myers, especially using that beautiful lot. See you guys next month!

Thanks Glenn, I've been busy building my new autox trailer for the last couple days :p

I do not have the time or the budget to do evo, which really bums me out because I have been waiting for Jean to put on a Phase 2 here in FL, maybe if it were closer.

I am planing to got to the Mini-Prix, though I prefer to drive up Friday and spend the night, but there does not seem to be any available rooms in Gainesville that night :(

Trey, get yourself to the Nats! Make us proud!

Kevin,
You have to check the Gator home game schedule. If there is a home game the closest you can get a room to GIR is Ocala.

The 30th is a Gator game vs. Alabama...hotel rooms will be scarce indeed! Brooksville was good Sunday...rain stayed away. 8 runs and lots of slalom and a turn-around that I never quite got right. Is there a course map somewhere online from previous Mini-Prixes? Obviously I have never been to one, but I get the impression they run a fairly open course?

PAW467

5th September 2006, 09:53

Yes, we do run a fairly open course. I'm not sure which way were running this year. We've been running with a decreasing radius turn to keep the speeds down below 100 for the high powered cars.

But it's always more then fun!

so yeah, whats up with the mscc event today/yesterday? Let me live vicariously through you guys until nationals, ive been painting at "work" tues-fri and now sat and sun and mon at the house up in tallahassee getting it ready for sale...

On the plus side, I have an interview for a staff writer position for the news sun in Sebring on tuesday! Guess all that waiting DID pay off (cross your fingers for me)

Its a local paper but still experience and the job that Ive wanted all these months, as a staff writer and NOT just freelance (jason, youre right about it taking awhile sometimes, thanks for helping me keep my head up during "post graduate unemployment")

Good luck Trey!

Did you guys read the article on the Solstice/Sky in the new (Oct.) SportsCar? It was interesting in that it read like a salespitch for the GM car while comparing to the NC Miata, but more humorous was the part about the car automatically dialing OnStar for help when they hit a cone on an autocross course...for some reason this is not an issue with my 15 year old Miata... :)

PullG

13th September 2006, 18:23

What's funnier is that the article is written as if no one's really tried autocrossing a Solstice yet. If the writer pulled a few names from Tour results and made a few phone calls, he'd have had a nice sidebar and made the article immediately relevant. Could have even followed up with another sidebar in the December issue on the Miata/Solstice contest at Nationals.

Gee, I guess I didn't read the article the same way Mark did. Except for that last line- "Chances are, however, that "different" may lead to victory." it seemed to me they were fairly harsh on the cars. Lots of comments about lack of trunk space, lack of options on the Club Sport Package, quality control issues and braking issues.

The points about the 5 speed coming with LSD in the Solstice and only on the 6 speed for the MX-5 are just fact- unfortunately. Seems they attribute the Solstice's advantage on the autocross course to the 245s vs the Miata's 205s. Given that represents a 19.5% increase in tire width it makes sense. Lots more grip.

Ah well, it's a moot point. I can't afford either one of them. I'll just have to keep running MY 15 yr old Miata and hope they don't make me race against the NC and the Solstice next year.

Interesting they commented on the lack of trunk space and lack of options available (though I agree)... those are kind of un-related if the purpose of the car is for autoxing :p

I'm not lining up to buy one, but I think they're one of the best looking cars on the U.S. market today, definitely in the top 5 under $30K.

kabel

14th September 2006, 17:05

I don't mind the styling, I like most of it. From a practicality perspective I would ever own one because of the aforementioned lack of trunk space - practicality aside I think it should have come from the factory with and LS1 already in it.

We had one showing up to the Deland events for a while, have not seen him lately though.

bobmunob

14th September 2006, 17:33

I would love one if it were not a chevy and was faster than my miata.

dncrdandy

14th September 2006, 21:58

Word is that the Z0K Club Sport Package IS faster than the 99 Miatas that have been the car to drive in the past. The stock Bilsteins aren't expected to be dogs either. It'll be interesting to see if they prove it in Topeka.

As for the styling I like the Solstice but front end and the Sky back end. The Sky front is just too busy for me. I guess it's my Miata sensibility coming through.

racing tired is where its at, just ask me and James, tallahassee residents (now nationals "also rans")that used to wake up at 3 am to make it to deland events.

On another note, if my dad shows up this weekend (Ill have the car en route to topeka) is there any way he can snag an ES ride to stay in the points race? (he needs events to qualify for a year end trophy and we arent sure if one deland and 2 sebrings will do it) Anyone? Bueler?

oh, and I passed my drug test (bet you guys didnt see THAT coming?!? ;) ) to work for the paper. Say hello to the new staff writer for the news sun in sebring! Now to haggle for more money :) before making it official!

I love you Central Florida guys and your "If I do Gainesville I'll have to get up at 5AM!!!!!!111" posts. :p

By 5am, we were watching the sun rise over I-75 on the way to CFR events in a cramped Miata while fighting over that last Frappucino to stay awake. ;)

i did the math Trey, and if ur dad goes to the rest of the races, then he should be good. And if he is not good, then I wont be good either.
He has been to 6 races out of a total of 15, there are 3 left. That brings the total number of races to 18, and half of that is 9. Sooooo, that just barely makes half of the races. Yay bored math!

Sideburns

16th September 2006, 18:07

It WILL be close, Im just not sure if he can definitely make the last 3, so he was looking for a co-drive in ES Sept 24th since he was planning on going and that was when I told him, dad, you know I love you, but I will already have the car ;)

I DO think it will come up to 9 events (repeat: I think)
no way to know for sure unless glenn/dat chime in with the facts, and the reason even I dont know is because of the whole IRCC debacle... changes event # and therefore # of events, but 1/2 plus one is what we have done in the past (once again, I THINK) which might make it 10! (edit: final # of events left is 4 because sebring sat and sun count as one event per day making it still possible even if 10 is the # to have)

Still looking guys, hes not bad, and even with no ABS he has yet to flatspot a tire on our car!

wowak: 2 possible codrivers? did the significant other finally come around!!?!???

Trey man, mega Congratulations on not only getting the new gig, but also getting the gig you wanted. That is awesome to hear

Ah to be young and invincible, that was 15-20 years ago for me. I try not to complain about getting up early, especially around Trey and James knowing that they often make the trek from Tally just to autox at Deland :bang: (never could figure that one out). You two are nuts and I hope that never changes! (I'll bookmark this thread and we'll all visit it again ten years from now to see if you two are still partying till 1am and hitting the road at 3am to autox. :p )

Not sure if I'll be at Deland next Sunday or not. Of course if I am and bymyself, that will be yet another ES co-drive spot that will be available. Though I must say, for whatever reason, I have become less and less enchanted with the Deland site as time goes by.

Lookin forward to seeing James and Trey's names up there in the top five at nats :D

Heh, truth be told, we're not sure why we do it too. Especially since on the drive back we always complain to each other about how the surface had no grip, dirt everywhere, etc. We just love autocross that much

Ha! My dad says the same thing! "You hate Tallahassee because it's a small town with nothing to do? Want to move to a happenin' place like Orlando? I'll check back with you in 20 years to see if you still care about about big cities with lots of bars and clubs to go to!!"

Lookin forward to seeing Trey's name up there in the top five at nats :D

Trey,
Cheryl and I want to add our congratulations on the job. We're looking to see a national trophy to add to the Pulitzer we expect you to get next week. Trailer is still available if you find something to pull it with, just let me know.

Just got a set of Kumho V710s. Those Hoosiers went away FAST. I think it might have been a combination of not enough camber and low air pressure causing them to wear on the shoulder. I had the Icehawk alignment done before the last event and it really does make a difference in the turn in. Just count the cones I hit!!! (5 in one run and that wasn't a spin out, it was just eating cones!!!!)

Hope to see you in Gainesville on the 8th.

larry- Gville is a possibility, Im thinking about hitting MGA in Cordele on the way back on the 1st if you would like a run down on how nationals went. Ill be leaving fri/sat and the race is on sunday, so If I can make the trip, thatll be the "cool down" race after nats.

I cant belive you people are talking trophies. James is running in CSP in an MR2 that, even if he did know how to drive( ;) james), there is some SERIOUS csp competition at nationals. And me? Im running team DFL as in just running for fun. GRM is paying me a little for a "First time at Solo Nationals" story so if anything Im heading out there for the freelance exposure that GRM will provide. That and not being able to keep up with Jesse N, and by that I mean he still cones and beats me most of the time... well Im just hoping for something in the 20s (since there are 35 of us in ES) It would be nice to go out there and kick butt, but what I, and I think James are thinking is that if we get the first nats out of the way while we dont have the skills, maybe if we go NEXT year when we get a little better we could have a chance without all the psychological mindgames of 2days running and it being the "Big Show" etc.

Trophy, no. Try not to DNF all 3 runs in one day to end up DFL, yes.

kevin- deland is more fun if you dont lift and just yank the steering wheel from side to side to help slow you down instead! Ill show you after your runs one month on a ride-along.

I've seen Robert Carpenter! He isn't fast, he's insane!

Gonna run the Hoosiers one more event-at least. I had them reversed on the rims. Too expensive NOT to get all the runs out of them I can.
No way to catch Albert- he's a lock unless he just doesn't show up and I win the rest of the events. That ain't gonna happen! If they only count your best 7 he wins either way.

Sure its stock. Its a special air pump that they had to put on certain cars to pass emissions in Kalifornia.

I just found out my brother (Jonathan) isn't going to make the event so I also have a co-drive seat open.

Jason:
Thanks for the offer. To keep it simple (not jump in with Kenn & Steve's 2 drive and make it a 3 drive) - I'll take you up on your offer, if that's OK. I'm leaving home now to stay with my Dad in Apopka, so if it is - I'll see you tomorrow.
If it isn't, Kenn & Steve or Brian - I'll hit one of you up instead.
Thanks to all that stepped up and said I could drive your ES.
PS: Trey in on the road to Nationals - he left yesterday (wants to "practice" on Sunday).

I hate my car! I was driving down to Deland when I decided to stop at a rest area just off of I-295. As I get out of the car, I notice a small stream of water. "Aww crap" I think to my self "I hope that's not MY car!" Turns out it was my car, so I decided to drive back to Tallahassee and try to find the problem.

Luckily, the leak isn't serious and I was able to make the 200 mile trip back to town without incident. I think as long as I keep the coolant topped off, I can drive it around town until I can fix the problem.

Would somebody please give me some details about the MSCC Minprix in G'ville next Saturday?

From the April results it would appear to be a standard autocross but the classes are somewhat different than SCCA.

What class would my 91 E Stock be placed in? (If I run with Azenis or if I run with "R" compunds)

How many runs is typical for one of these events?

Since it's right here I am seriously thinking of entering but I need more details before I shell out $45.

Thanks

kabel

24th September 2006, 22:45

A stock 91 is F stock with Martin, and stock is stock. A fully prepped SCCA E-stock car would be in F-Prepared with Martin. I run adjustable shocks and r-comps (and soon a front bar) which puts me in FP. So you would be in FP too because it looks like your car is setup just like mine. We should get at least four runs with a possibility for fun runs following competition. Have you been to the Test Track before?

Schedule, Details and pre-registration available on the Martin Web Site (http://www.martinsportscarclub.com/)

oh, and if you ever want to peak in on the Martin forum, we are on autocrossforum.com. Here is a link to the Mini Prix discussion (http://www.autocrossforum.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3172&hl=); excuse the A.D.D. nature of our members :p

We try to run a different configuration each time but that should give you an idea of what the course is like.

It's not that I'm against horsepower, I just ain't got none!!! :( (But I do have some VERY energetic mice in there running their little hearts out for me)

This from a guy who signs on as TURBO 13b.
How come it is that guys WITH HP always want to say how unimportant HP is. Why do you think I wanted some cones out there?... so the HP WOULDN'T be so important.

I've done a Solo Trials as well as SoloII at the test track. Enjoyed both but given the fact that it appears that at the Martin Event I'd be in the same class as some cars with considerably more HP than my little TC (ToyCar) it'll be a lot more fun and I'll be more competitve if we're doing a lot of turning.

dncrdandy,
Actually, I've meet Turbo13B,and is a good guy and it is true. HP is not always important! Use your speed, our cars are far more nimble then most others.

And I don't understand why do you say that you will be in a class with more HP. The 91-97 Miatas run together, were talking about 10-15hp. I've seen 1.6L's beat 1.8L's. My trusty old steed may be quick but by no means a HP demon!

kabel

27th September 2006, 10:12

Granted there may be a couple additional drivers we do not normally see but the regulars in the MSCC FP class is made up of 90-97 Miatas, 85-91 RX7s and the occasional mr2. As long as the weather hold out that day I think we'll all have a really time within our class.

I'll be in the Miata running FP. Jonathan is in Germany right now and he'll miss the mini-prix so the RX8 isn't an option. Plus I have enough points in SMST to win the class for the year so I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Personally I prefer driving the Miata anyways. The RX8 is a decent car but its too pushy in stock form for my tastes.

Hey, I don't think you know me but I'm a former MSCC member. The autocrossing out here in TX is much different in FL. Most of the autocrosses that I go to out here are faster than the Mini Prix. I've actually hit triple digits in my old autox car (E36 M3).

There are a lot of courses that I walk and I keep saying in my head "damn, another HP course." 9 times out of 10 they end up being momentum courses and I beat a bunch of high HP courses. This is coming from a guy that went from a M3 to a Miata. Even on courses with long straights, the handling of Miatas will surprise a lot of people.

I remember you Thomas. I used to run a green Trans Am with MSCC up until recently. I think we did an Evo school/practice day together once...

Anyways I completely agree that the vast majority of autocross courses are momentum courses if you drive them right. Horsepower is alot of fun but tis really hard to make up alot of time on the straights. Handling is where its all at ;)

Also I've noticed alot of people who drive low HP cars seem to think that "fast" courses favor HP cars while slow, tight corners favor momentum cars when really the opposite is true. Slow tight corners just give the more powerful cars another chance to accelerate (their strongpoint) while fast courses are usually fast because you have to keep your speed (momentum) up.

Yeah, we've got some long, fast courses out here. This was a BMWCCA course and they are known for fast, non-technical courses. There are other clubs here with much more technical courses.

BTW, the last event I did at Tavarese was crazy, going through the same gate 3 times. It was a tough course.

That is what I was getting at. I know It just sounds weak from a guy with more HP than he can use. But I do know how It feels I spent many years chasing Pettit, and Speedsource cars in ITS with much less HP than thay had.

Thanks are going great! TX has been good.

Jenn's old black Miata is now in CSP (I raced in ES for one season). I'm running TEIN Flex coilovers (9k F/6k R), hollow front bar, no rear bar, ebay header, custom shorty exhaust, Sparco Sprints and everything that isn't necessary is removed (still gotta take out the A/C).

I finally got a hard top and removed the soft top.

SM2 would be fun but I've got a lot to do to make the car competitive in CSP.

I would love to run the car how it is now at Tavarese, I think it would be faster than the M3.

Anyone know why at SCCA nationals Trey is not driving. I hope the results published are wrong, but it only shows Jason running the 94 Black in ES.

Note: Looks like Dat, and company ran into some stiff competition this week, though Per may pull out a trophy.

dncrdandy

29th September 2006, 12:08

I think Trey couldn't get his car out so if you look you'll find him running an MR2 in SM-2. Doesn't appear to be a competitive car, or driving that rear engine is enough different that he hasn't got it down. Bet he does better today though.

Jesse is still close enough to get it done although 1st might be a big task. He's only 0.13 out of 2nd though.

Hey, MSCC guys, if you could save me the searching, are TSIs legal in FP? I just made a nice (imo) DIY set, but of course I made them not only reversible, but easily swappable to return to ES legal, but if its all the same I wouldn't mind leaving them in to see what people think of them at the prix tomorrow. Of course, if they're certainly illegal I'll put the marker lights back in.

I can explain this one. :)

Trey trailered the Miata with the intention of running it at Nationals. Jim offered Trey the chance to drive the SM2 MR-2 and like any red-blooded male, Trey jumped at the chance to drive that beast.

That left an open spot in his car which I ended up filling. You'll see me in ES in 27th spot after day one and 29th after day 2. At one point, I was as high as 24th out of ~37-38 people but pissed it away with poor car setup and terrible driving on day 2.
