Critics Consensus

If you only watch one art-world satire with horror overtones this year -- or most others -- it should probably be Velvet Buzzsaw.

Velvet Buzzsaw | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Jo Livingstone The New Republic It comes within an inch of a really snappy disquisition (to use Morf's word) on the painting marketplace, but to avoid disappointment it's better approached as a gory romp. Feb 14, 2019 Full Review Velvet Buzzsaw | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Jordan Hoffman TV Guide This is a movie for people who get the joke. Feb 8, 2019 Full Review Velvet Buzzsaw | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Alissa Wilkinson Vox It doesn't really add up to much, it's darkly enjoyable as long as you're into all that. Rated: 2.5/5 Feb 7, 2019 Full Review Velvet Buzzsaw | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Aaron Charles InSession Film Velvet Buzzsaw may think itself as art, but I fear that it is just another entry to throw on the Netflix heap of content. Rated: C- May 10, 2024 Full Review Velvet Buzzsaw | Rotten Tomatoes (5) John Brhel Vague Visages Velvet Buzzsaw wants to be a satire of the shallow, nose-in-the-air modern art scene and a supernatural thriller — and I believe a movie in that vein could be done effectively — but it doesn’t deliver on either fronts. Jun 6, 2023 Full Review Velvet Buzzsaw | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Brian T. Carney Washington Blade This is part of the admirable restraint that Gilroy shows throughout the movie. While he never forgets that this is a “satirical thriller,” he is never mean-spirited or excessively gory. Dec 7, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Kenneth M Stunning film with some absolutely fantastic actors like Gyllenhaal in fun gonzo mode, the luminous Russo, underrated hunk Magnussen, and Collette in full camp mode among others. The script goes off the rails, but it has something to say. Never boring with some of the most gorgeous kills committed to film (something I thought I would never say). Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Ian W It's an odd film. Part satire on the art world and part horror. Not sure those two have ever been mixed before. I thought it was funny. OK the supernatural element was a bit silly at times, but I thought that that was the film sending itself up. I'd say definitely worth a watch. Not sure why the audience score was so low. I guess not everyone got the joke. I think I did. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/24 Full Review Steve M A movie about the art world, artists and marketing is enough for a good movie. The creepy horror story inserted into the film is just plain predictable and bad. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/24 Full Review Celeste W I thought it was unique and great. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review Audience Member Art is killer but literally is a whole different story Jake Gyllenhaal, Renee Russo, Toni Collette, Zawae Ashton, and John Malkovich and director Dan Gilroy of 'Nightcrawler' In the contemporary art scene of Los Angeles art is a big thing for collectors and artists The biggest gallery called Haze draws in crowds like Comic Con Morf is the main critic we follow; he's a former member of a rock band and he stumbles onto a collection of paintings by an unknown artist He starts noticing strange things happening as well as people ending up dead Morf finds out the exhibits are actually possessed taking vengeance upon those filled with greed Can Morf and the others escape the deadly supernatural forces of these art pieces? If there's no death there's no art This is way too long and I wanted more of the actual carnage by the paintings themselves It's very clunky execution wise but has a true passion for beautiful imagery plus it presents the idea that our own personal taste is the only real thing we ever have It could've been better but acts as a bloody satire of the modern artworld heavily criticized Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/01/24 Full Review Arya S So bad, it's good, made all the more enjoyable by Jake Gyllenhall's outlandish art critic role.
